Trifecta frequencies, state-by-state

You may think you know the political climate of your state, but does your state government actually align with those ideas? According to data from Ballotpedia and Truth in Accounting, you may be surprised by the political majority of your state government--specifically, the amount of "trifectas" for each party. Ballotpedia identifies a "trifecta" when one major party holds the governorship, has a majority in the state senate, and a majoirty in the state house.

For democratic trifectas from 1992 to 2013, the west coast and, surprisingly, the south experienced the most trifectas regionally. Top states include Maryland, West Virginia, Hawaii, and North Carolina.

Fewer states have experienced republican trifectas, but some states have had a staggering amount. For example, Utah has experienced 22 republican trifectas from 1992 to 2013--more than any other state for either party. South Dakota, North Dakota, and Idaho also reported high numbers.
