Illinois spent $13.4 billion in 2012 on Medicaid, the average for states was $8.3 billion.

The governor of Illinois recently announced he is considering a $1.5 billion cut into the Medicaid program for the state. At this time, 1 in 6 kids is receiving Medicaid and 1 in 10 seniors as well.

Since Medicaid is a jointly funded program between the federal government and states, this would mean a reduction of funding of about 10-14 percent of the state’s budget. This would vary considering if the program was 50 percent or 100 percent matched by the federal government.
