City Real GDP Per Capita

City Real GDP Per Capita is the Gross Domestic Product of a given area divided by the resident population of the area. The calculations for this data use Real GDP from the BEA as well as metropolitan population data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), "Real GDP is in thousands of chained 2012 dollars. Industry detail is based on the 2012 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS).” This data series does not include Chula Vista, Irvine, Plano, and Santa Ana (not available on the website). Additionally, some of the cities have the same data points because the metropolitan area includes multiple cities. For example, Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Anaheim are one metropolitan statistical area, so the numbers for their Real GDP are the same.

The metropolitan area statistical population data is provided by the U.S. Census Bureau. The estimates are based on the 2010 Census and reflect changes to the April 1, 2010 population due to the Count Question Resolution program and geographic program revisions. All geographic boundaries for the 2018 population estimates series except statistical area delineations are as of January 1, 2018. For population estimates methodology statements, see http://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/popest/technical-documentation/methodology.html.
