The 2004-2012 data given here for "College Freshmen Retention Rates" refers to the percentage of all first-time college freshmen enrolled for the first time who return for their second year. The data comes from the NCES, IPEDS Fall 2017 Enrollment Retention Rate File and was provided by the National Information Center for Higher Education Policymaking and Analysis
The newest data (2013-2022) now comes from the The National Student Clearinghouse® Research Center™. The year given is actually the year that cohort of students entered college, and what percentage returned the following fall. So the 2022 data is the percentage of the students who entered in 2022 and returned in the fall of 2023.
