The murder rates given here are for murder and nonnegligent manslaughter combined.  According to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program murder and nonnegligent manslaughter are defined  "as the willful (nonnegligent) killing of one human being by another. The classification of this offense is based solely on police investigation as opposed to the determination of a court, medical examiner, coroner, jury, or other judicial body."

The data for each state is the number of murders per 100,000 people within the state in a given year as provided by the FBI on the Uniform Crime Reporting "Table 5: Crime in the United States by State, 2019." The data in this table came from all law enforcement agencies in the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program, including those submitting less than 12 months of data.

For information about the methodology used in collecting and computing this data please see the Table 5 Data Declaration.
