Net Position

This calculation represents the net position of the federal government, derived by subtracting our estimate of total bills from assets reported in the Financial Report of the U.S. Government. Total bills include the present value of projected government expenditures for Social Security, Medicare Parts A, B, and D, as well as other social insurance programs, over the next 75 years. These expenditures are expected to exceed social insurance revenues. Both revenues and expenditures account for contributions from and payments to current participants. This is referred to as the closed group, as it includes only current participants and excludes future ones.
