Population in City

Source: U.S. Census Bureau
Latest Data: 2023
Frequency: Annual

Population in City estimates for major cities comes from the table: Annual Estimates of the Resident Population for Incorporated Places of 20,000 or More, Ranked by July 1, 2023 Population: April 1, 2020 to July 1, 2023.

Population in City Ranking ranks the top 75 cities in the United States with 1 being the most populous city and 75 being the least populous city in a given year. The cities included here are the most populous 75 cities in 2017, even if not all of those cities were in this group in prior years.

Population Rate of Change Per 1,000 represents the change in city population in a given year for every 1,000 residents.

Population numbers and rate of change for 2020 are not comparable due to poor collections during the pandemic.  We have omitted rate of change for 2020 because the Census Bureau says the following:  "The 2020 1-year estimates are the only ones released as experimental estimates. You can review the resources for the 2020 1-year experimental estimates, but we do not recommend using them in conjunction with other standard 1-year releases. We will not be releasing any standard 1-year estimates for 2020, but the 2021 1-year will be comparable to other standard releases."

The U.S. Census Bureau includes the following note about methodology:  "Areas are included in this table if they exceed the stated threshold at any point in the time series. The estimates are based on the 2010 Census and reflect changes to the April 1, 2010 population due to the Count Question Resolution program and geographic program revisions. All geographic boundaries for the 2019 population estimates series are as of January 1, 2020. An "(X)" in the 2010 Census field indicates a locality that was formed or incorporated after the 2010 Census. Additional information on these localities can be found in the Geographic Boundary Change Notes (see https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/geography/technical-documentation/boundary-change-notes.html. For population estimates methodology statements, see http://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/popest/technical-documentation/methodology.html."
